Robert Chao Romero is Professor and Chair of the UCLA Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies.  His research explores the little-known history of Asian-Latinos, as well as the role of Christianity in social justice movements in Latin America and among U.S. Latinas and Latinos.  

Professor Chao Romero is the author of several award-winning books, including, “The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940” and  “Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity,” which explores the history of Latina/o theology, social justice, and religious organizing in Latin America.  

The son of a Mexican father and a Chinese immigrant mother, Professor Chao Romero is also an attorney, an ordained minister, and a faith-rooted community organizer. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in Latin American history and his Juris Doctor from UC Berkeley.
